Thank god I had brought my wallet with my New York State Driver’s License as I knew this was destined to be an incredible morning should we actually manage to convince these strange people to rent us a car for 2.5 hours. After wandering around this motel-like structure and purchasing some cheesy Ascension Island swag (shot glass, comb, magnet, koozie, patch) we ran into Tim who suggested we rent a car from the hotel and explore the island instead of wasting our time in the ghost town around us. We decided to head for the Obsidian Hotel, which we knew had to be open as our friends and ship-mates Tony and Tim Soper were staying there for a few days before their flights home to Europe. ![]() ![]() The only establishments that opened at a reasonable hour were the pubs, however we agreed that it probably wasn’t prudent to begin drinking Savannah Dry’s and MGD’s, the islands two prevailing beverages, at such an early hour. We turned up at the Rock Shop only to find out that it’s extensive operational hours spanned from 20:00 to 22:00, which we soon learned was standard operating procedure in Georgetown. It was 9:30AM and not a soul was around…very strange. We had a simple map of Georgetown’s highlights, the Rock Shop, the Admirals Club, Two Boats, and the Obsidian Hotel were all on our short list, however upon arrival we realized that the town hadn’t awakened yet. After a lazy morning and a quick breakfast, the four of us loaded a zodiac and were driven ashore to the Georgetown Settlement on Asecension. ![]() Our second day on Ascension Island was fantastic, incredibly strange, but there’s no denying how much fun we had.
